 In General News, Press Releases

The La Cueva girls soccer team opened the Metro Championships with a 2-0 win over Manzano.  The defending state champs had 20 shots on goal and shutout the Monarchs in the season opener for both teams.

Senior captain Deja Sandoval scored the first goal of the match 14 minutes in.  Senior Jordyn Maes added a second goal a couple minutes into the second half.

“We played well,” said head coach Amber Ashcroft following the win.  “The turf was hard to get used to again.”

The Bears return nine players from last year’s state championship squad.  This year’s roster is full of juniors and seniors with two sophomores in the mix.

“I would say we are even with the other favorites,” said Ashcraft when asked if she considers her team one of the frontrunners.  “Volcano Vista didn’t lose too many players and Cibola will be in the mix too.”

Next up for La Cueva is a matchup against Volcano Vista on Wednesday.
