#1 VOLCANO VISTA HAWKS HOPING FOR 1ST SOCCER TITLE SINCE 2010
The Volcano Vista girls soccer team will head into the Fuddruckers State Soccer Championships this week as the top seed in Class 5A. “I don’t think we’ve ever been number one, maybe number two,” said head coach Samantha Lucero. “They definitely deserve it. I’m very proud of them and proud to be their coach.”
The Hawks are 16-2 on the season and Lucero likes the way her team is playing right now. “I love the way the team is playing,” said Lucero. “We’re clicking, we’re having great practices, we’re scoring goals and everybody is putting in their top effort.”
With the #1 seed, Volcano Vista earned a first-round bye. Lucero and the Hawks spent the past week preparing for their quarterfinal match. “At this point, it’s a lot of walk-throughs, definitely a lot of set pieces, corners, things like that,” she said. “Things that we have to make sure, in the time of need, that’s where games end and we have to make sure we’re flawless with that.”
Volcano Vista’s leading scorer is Lauren Machuca with 17 goals and 5 assists. “She’s been amazing up top,” said the head coach. “She’s only a sophomore, so she’s only going up from here.” Volcano Vista’s defense has been solid only giving up two goals in their last 12 matches. In fact, 15 of their 16 wins were shutouts. The Hawks are deep. Five of their six seniors have committed to play at the next level; three of them will sign with the University of New Mexico women’s soccer program. Dalis Bruce, Natalia Bruciaga and Arianna Cisneros all plan to play for the Lobos.
With a deep squad that is tough to score on, could this be the year for the Hawks?
“It’s been 9 years and I hope we can get it done,” Lucero said.
Volcano Vista will meet up with Mayfield at 11:30am on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Fuddruckers State Soccer Championships at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex.
