NMAA FOUNDATION TO AWARD $23,000 IN STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico Activities Association is excited to announce the recipients of the 2018-2019 NMAA Foundation Scholarships. The NMAA Foundation will recognize the 17 students receiving these scholarships during the NMAA State Basketball Championships which will be held March 12-16. Over 200 students applied for the scholarships, with nine receiving $1,000, six receiving $1,500, and two receiving $2,500.   There were nine different scholarship categories.

The following list details those students who were selected:

Extraordinary Participation Scholarship, presented by the NMAA Foundation ($2,500 each)
*given to students excelling in athletics, activities, and academics

  1. Rebekah Christensen, Portales
  2. Ty Wagley, Animas

“Compete with Class” Scholarships, presented by the NM National Guard ($1,500 each)
*given to students that exemplify the ideals of sportsmanship & the Compete with Class initiative

  1. Emily Nguyen – Farmington
  2. Kevin Jay Gut-omen, Loving
  3. Kylee Harrison – Santa Rosa
  4. Randy Ferrell – Escalante

Mario Martinez Memorial Scholarship ($1,500 each)
*given to students excelling in athletics and academics within Class A-2A schools

  1. Baylee Sours, Texico
  2. Kiki Roybal, Melrose

Dan & Lucille Wood/Gray Gladiator Scholarship, presented by Subway ($1,000 each)
*given to students excelling in athletics and academics

  1. Madison Cross, Piedra Vista
  2. Nicholas Cobos, Dexter

Activities Scholarship, presented by Subway ($1,000 each)
*given to students excelling in activities and academics

  1. Leonardo Aragon, Mora
  2. Rybecca Webster, Animas

El Richards/Francis Walsh Spirit Scholarship, presented by Varsity Spirit ($1,000 each)
*given to students excelling in spirit (cheer/dance) and academics

  1. Amanda Stone, St. Pius X
  2. Hailey Zinc, Carlsbad

Coach Dick Shelley St. Michael’s HS Basketball Scholarship ($1,000)
*given to students excelling in basketball and academics

  1. Eric Meyer, Sandia

Ralph Ortiz BPOE Elks Club of Santa Fe Scholarship ($1,000)
*given to students excelling in athletics and academics

  1. Colton Rohrbach, Texico

Santa Fe Knights of Columbus Scholarship ($1,000)
*given to students excelling in athletics and academics

  1. Devon Romero, St. Michael’s

The NMAA Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was set up in 2007 to support the many students that participate in high school athletic and activity programs across New Mexico.  The funds raised by the Foundation are used for student scholarships and school grants/support.
