WEEK 6 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS

 In General News, Press Releases

Number one Roswell travels to Belen this week.  “The Casillas and Aguilar kids are two of the best players we will see all year,” said Roswell coach Jeff Lynn.  “We will have our hands full.”  Here’s a preview of that game and a couple other noteworthy match ups this week.

Centennial (5-0) at
Carlsbad (2-2-1)
The Cavemen are coming off back-to-back losses, falling last week 12-7 to Mayfield.  The Hawks are perfect on the season scoring 42 points or more in three of their five wins.  Centennial quarterback Lance Frost is putting up big numbers.  “Our defense has been in somewhat of a rut lately and we’re looking to improve this week,” said Carlsbad head coach Gary Bradley.  “Centennial is fast.  We are fast.  They are physical, we are physical.  The key is not giving up the big play and to punch it in when we are close.”

Del Norte (1-4) at
Eldorado (4-1)
It’s going to be tough sledding for the Eagles after losing their star quarterback Gabe Smith last week to a collarbone injury.  He is expected to miss about 6-8 weeks.  Nick Petty stepped in when Smith went out last week.  Eldorado will get a much needed bye after this one.  After dropping their first four games of the year, the Knights are coming off their first victory of the season, a 55-14 win over Highland.

Los Lunas (4-1) at
Goddard (3-0-1)
The Rockets have yet to lose this year behind quarterback Dalton Bowles.  Goddard shut out Portales last week 28-0. The Tigers bounced back from their first loss with a hard-fought 38-35 win over Cibola last weekend.

Hobbs (3-1) at
Las Cruces (3-2)
Don’t sleep on Hobbs. They’ve won three straight with victories over Artesia, Roswell and Lovington.  The up-and-down ride of Las Cruces this year is currently trending up with back-to-back wins.  “We are progressing every week and learning what it takes to prepare and play at a higher level,” said Las Cruces head coach Mark Lopez.  “We’ll have to find a way to do the simple things better to have a chance to win.”

Roswell (3-1) at
Belen (3-2)
The Coyotes pulled up a dominating win over Los Lunas a couple weeks ago.  They will try to repeat the feat this Friday against another Valencia County foe.  The Eagles are coming off a road loss at Piedra Vista.  The Eagles beat the Coyotes twice last year.  “My team is still growing,” said Roswell head coach Jeff Lynn.  “We still have a long way to go.  The Casillas and Aguilar kids are two of the best players we will see all year.  We will have our hands full.”  Belen head coach Greg Henington said, “As of last week we have played spotty.  We are very excited to change that.  Roswell has proved they are a top team in 5A.  We are pumped to play them.”

Santa Fe (2-3) at
St. Michael’s (1-3)
The Horsemen picked up their first win of the year last weekend against Capital and now it’s another cross-town rival on the schedule. The Demons handed Bernalillo their first loss of the year last week 17-15.

Silver (3-2) at
Ruidoso (4-1)
Silver has only played one New Mexico school on their schedule so far, a 41-22 win against Cobre. Ruidoso edged out Tularosa last week 14-7.  It was the lowest point output for the Warriors all season.

Texico (2-3) at
Eunice (5-0)
The number one Cardinals are coming off a 34-0 win over Dexter last week.  “We need to carry that momentum over into the Texico game,” said head coach Ken Stevens.  “Texico is a good team that has some injuries and we feel are better than their record.”
