CHARGERS SWEEP HOST INVITATIONAL

 In General News, Press Releases

The Academy boys and girls soccer teams completed a sweep of their host Invitational on Saturday.  The Charger boys beat Cleveland 2-1 in the championship.  The win avenged a loss to the Storm earlier this season.  It’s the first time in three years the Academy boys won their host tournament.

“The team has kept their heads down to the grindstone and worked on team concepts and learning a new formation,” said boys head coach Laney Kolek.  “Our senior players are helping to teach our youthful talent what it means to play soccer at the Academy.  They’re staying positive as a unit in the hopes that the early lumps will result in long-term season success.”

The Academy boys (5-2-1) are at Volcano Vista on Tuesday at 3:30pm.

On the girls side, the Chargers beat Sandia Prep 2-0 in the championship match Saturday morning. Academy scored their first goal of the day after Eliza Mariner put one in at the 31stminute.  The Chargers held the Sundevils without a shot on goal for the entire first half.  Tessa Anderson would add a second half goal.

“I think our team has played pretty well in both the Metro and Albuquerque Academy Invite, especially with the amount of players we have out to serious knee injuries,” said head coach Peter Glidden.  “Several new young players are stepping up and our seniors are leading by exmpale in practice and games,” he added.

The Chargers have only given up three goals in eight games.  “Lorelei Logan has been amazing in goal,” said Glidden.  “With the weapons we have offensively (Anna Carpio, Tessa Anderson, Eliza Mariner), we could have another strong finish if we keep playing great team defense.”

Academy girls (7-1) will host La Cueva on Tuesday afternoon.
