MaxPreps Tabs New Mexico’s Top Basketball Programs/Players for Upcoming Season
As the high school basketball season approaches, MaxPreps has released its annual rundown of the top boys and girls programs in every state—and New Mexico’s elite have earned the spotlight.
On the boys’ side, Sandia High School has been named the No. 1 team in the Land of Enchantment. The Matadors, who finished an impressive 27–4 last season, return a core that has analysts projecting another deep postseason run. MaxPreps national writer Jordan Divens noted, “Following a run to the Class 5A state championship game last season, the Matadors are expected to be formidable this season behind returning all-state honorable mention selections Isaiah Brown and Gad Harris.”
For the girls’ rankings, La Cueva High School takes the top spot in New Mexico. MaxPreps analyst Aaron Williams highlighted the Bears’ wealth of returning talent, including all five of their top scorers from last year’s 22–8 squad that reached the Class 5A semifinals. The Bears will once again lean on senior standout Jordan Dyer, along with rising sophomores Payton Lobato and Siena Tesinsky, and seasoned seniors Paz Romero and Kali Burtenshaw.
MaxPreps also unveiled its picks for the top boys and girls basketball players in each state—and New Mexico is represented by two standout seniors.
La Cueva’s Jordan Dyer earned recognition as the state’s top girls player after averaging more than 20 points per game last season, paired with over 6 rebounds and 3 steals per contest while guiding the Bears to the 5A semifinals.
On the boys’ side, Cleveland High School’s Remy Albrecht was named New Mexico’s top player. Divens praised Albrecht’s breakout performance, writing, “An explosive junior season saw Albrecht put up 29.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.8 steals per game to guide the Storm to the Class 5A state quarterfinals.” The Storm are set to open the new campaign on December 2nd at Los Lunas.
