MANZANO HIGH SCHOOL GOES GOLD FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS
Every year, the Manzano High School community substitutes their royal purple color for a touch of gold in honor of children fighting cancer. But behind the Gold Game lies a story of friendship, heartbreak, and hope.
It began with three friends — Emily, Kylie, and Kileigh. Emily was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer. Not long after, Kylie faced her own battle with the disease. Both girls fought bravely but ultimately lost their lives far too soon.
Their friend, Kileigh Hoffman, carried their memory forward. Determined to honor Emily and Kylie, she raised awareness and inspired others to help find a cure — so no one else has to say goodbye too soon. “It’s a hard topic sometimes, but this helps bring joy to it,” said Kileigh.
On Saturday, October 11th, the Manzano Monarchs hosted the Albuquerque Academy Chargers in their annual Gold Game — a game dedicated to going gold for kids with cancer. Fans made a difference by enjoying lemonade, with all proceeds benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, funding research to help end childhood cancer. “She was the smiliest kid, even though she was going through the worst thing she possibly could,” said Kileigh about her friend Emily.
Kileigh is a senior at Manzano High School, but hopes the Gold Game tradition continues after she graduates. “I hope some of these girls help keep this impact stay alive and I hope to come back and show my support once again,” said Kileigh.
