COMPETE WITH CLASS: ST. MICHAEL’S & LEGACY ACADEMY DANCING IN THE DARK

Volleyball is supposed to be about pressure, momentum and finding a way to win when the moment gets big. But recently at the Capital City Volleyball Tournament, the biggest moment had nothing to do with the final score.

With Legacy Academy and St. Michael’s locked in a battle, the game was as intense as it gets. The two teams had split the first two games, and with Game 3 hanging in the balance, St. Michael’s held a 23-21 lead.

Then, suddenly, the lights went out.

A citywide power outage in Santa Fe brought the match to an unexpected halt. But instead of letting the interruption put a damper on the tournament, the players from both teams found a way to keep the energy going.

With the court illuminated by the lights of fans’ phones, players from Legacy Academy and St. Michael’s came together for a spontaneous dance on the court. What had been an intense championship battle just moments earlier turned into a celebration shared by both teams—and the fans loved every second of it.

For a few minutes, there was no scoreboard. No rivalry. No pressure.

Just a group of student-athletes enjoying the moment together.

It was a simple, spontaneous reminder of what high school sports can be at their best. Competition may separate teams across the net, but sportsmanship can bring them together.

The match will have to wait.

The power may have gone out, but the spirit of the Capital City Volleyball Tournament certainly did not. And sometimes, the best moments in sports aren’t the ones that were planned.
