HOPE CHRISTIAN’S JIM MURPHY RECORDS 900TH WIN WITH BOYS BASKETBALL PROGRAM
Hope Christian boys basketball coach Jim Murphy reached a major milestone during the holiday break. Murphy recorded career win number 900 with the boys basketball program in a 99-62 victory over St. Pius X on December 30, 2025. “It’s an elite group with the famous Ralph Tasker,” said Murphy about reaching 900 wins.
Murphy is number two on New Mexico’s all-time wins list, behind Ralph Tasker who has 1,117 victories in New Mexico. They are the only two boys basketball coaches in New Mexico with over 900 wins. According to the NFHS Record Book, Murphy is the sixth-leading active coach in the country and 41st nationally all-time. “People ask me if I’m going to catch Ralph Tasker, I don’t think I am,” said Murphy. “I don’t think I’ll stick around that long,” Murphy joked. “40 plus years of coaching high school basketball, working with teenagers, is a good credit in itself.”
This is the second time Murphy reached the 900-win plateau. He started his coaching career at Hope Christian in 1982 and led the girls team to an 18-7 record, before taking over the boys program. Murphy has won 16 state championships with the Huskies. Murphy says he takes each year one at a time, and then evaluates after the season how much longer he will coach. “I still enjoy a lot of the things I’m doing and just go one year at a time,” he said. “There will be an end pretty soon, but I don’t know when.”
Murphy’s overall record as the boys basketball coach is currently 901-292. The Huskies will face the Cleveland Storm on Tuesday in the first round of the APS Metro Championships tournament.
