DION’S STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: SOPHIA LOPEZ, RIO GRANDE HIGH SCHOOL

 In General News, Press Releases

Each month, we shine a light on a New Mexico student who is making the most of their high school experience—on the field, in the gym, and beyond. This month’s Dion’s Student Spotlight belongs to a senior who does it all at Rio Grande High School.

Sophia Lopez isn’t just busy—she’s everywhere. A four-year varsity athlete in volleyball, basketball, and tennis, Sophia has spent her high school career competing at the highest level. While she’s excelled across multiple sports, basketball holds a special place in her heart.
“I just love the pace of the game and the rush you get when you make a good play,” she said. “You feed off the energy of your teammates, and that’s one of my favorite parts.”

At 5’11”, the post player hopes to continue her basketball journey at the next level after graduation, carrying with her the same intensity and passion she’s shown at Rio Grande.

But Sophia’s leadership doesn’t stop when the final buzzer sounds. Off the court, she serves as student body president and yearbook editor-in-chief, roles inspired by her older brother, who once held the same titles. “In student senate, we get to better the school,” she explained. “And in yearbook, I love being able to document everything that happens during the year and look back on it.”

For Sophia, involvement is about more than building a résumé—it’s about growth.
“I learn so many new things and meet so many new people being involved,” she said. “You only go through high school once, so I try to make the most of it.”
