Kaselle Davis of Las Cruces Named Gatorade New Mexico Girls Track & Field Player of the Year
Gatorade today announced Kaselle Davis of Las Cruces High School is the 2024-25 Gatorade New Mexico Girls Track & Field Player of the Year.
Gatorade Player of the Year is the top honor in high school sports, celebrating the nation’s best high school athletes for their success on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The award distinguishes Davis as New Mexico’s best high school girls track & field athlete, and she joins an impressive group of alumni that spans CEOs, coaches and star athletes such as Sanya Richards (2001-02, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fl.), Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (2014-15, 2015-16 & 2016-17, Union Catholic High School, N.J.) and Angelina Napoleon (2022-23, Allegany-Limestone Central School, N.Y.).
The 5-foot-5 senior sprinter and jumps specialist scored a meet-high 26 points at the Class 5A state championships this past season, winning three individual titles and leading the Bulldawgs to 6th place as a team. Already the state record-holder in the 200- and 400-meter dash as well as the high jump, Davis swept those events and added a second-place finish in the 100 at states. New Mexico’s returning Gatorade Player of the Year, she graduates as an eight-time individual state champion to go with a shared title in the 4×200. At the Therman Jordan Relays in April, she broke her own state record in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-foot-10, though the mark is not official because it didn’t occur at the state meet. The clearance did, however, tie for the nation’s No. 8 ranking among girls prep competitors this spring.
Davis has volunteered locally on behalf of the Holy Temple Church of God and Christ in Alamogordo. “Kaselle Davis graduates as one of the most versatile girls prep greats in New Mexico’s history,” said Rich Gonzalez, editor of PrepCalTrack.com. “Her 5-10 clearance in the high jump at the Therman Jordan Relays eclipses her own state-record mark of 5-9. Call it what you want, but it’s the highest any girl has jumped in that state.”
Davis has maintained a 3.79 weighted GPA in the classroom. She has signed a written letter of athletic aid to compete at Indiana University this fall.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states across 12 different high school sports – football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field – and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sport, every Player of the Year also receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner. To date, the Gatorade Player of the Year program has provided more than $5.6 million in grants to winners across more than 2,000 organizations.
