NMAA TO HOST FIRST GIRLS WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

ALBUQUERQUE, NM– The New Mexico Activities Association will be hosting its first girls’ wrestling tournament as part of the 2018 New Mexico National Guard State Wrestling Championships.  The girls only exhibition will run in conjunction with the state meet on February 16-17 at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, NM.

According to weight assessment data, there are currently 115 girls participating in wrestling across the state.  There will be eight weight classes (101, 106, 111, 121, 131, 143, 160, 185) with eight girls per weight participating in the combined-classification exhibition tournament. A total of 38 high schools will be represented in this event.

The first round of the girls event will be held at approximately 12:30pm on Friday, February 16th, with the finals to take place on Saturday, February 17th at approximately 1:00pm.  A complete schedule of the 2018 championships and girls’ exhibition tournament can be found on the Wrestling page of the NMAA website at www.nmact.org.

Girls wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports nationwide and the NMAA is excited to see if an event like this will increase female interest and participation in the sport here in New Mexico.
