Wrestling State Information and Points of Emphasis
1. Important Dates
• First day of regular season practice – Monday, November 5, 2007
• Single school WWMP assessments may begin – Monday, November 5, 2007
• Cluster WWMP assessments – Monday – Saturday, November 19-24, 2007
• Deadline for completion of online district rules clinic – November 30, 2007
• Deadline for submission of WWMP Nutrition Education Requirement form
• WWMP descent plans (except 285lbs – see policy) cut-off – January 5th, 2008
• One pound growth allowances granted – January 6th and February 1st, 2008
• State tournament entries due – Sunday, February 17th, 2008
• State tournament qualifiers posted – Monday, February 18th, 2008
• State tournament seeding and bracketing – Thursday, February 20th , 2008
• State tournament – Friday, Saturday, February 22nd, 23rd, 2008
2. State Tournament Information
• Dates – Friday, Saturday, February 22, 23, 2008
• Site – Santa Ana Star Center, Rio Rancho, NM
• Qualifying – top 16 individuals by overall record in each weight class in 4A and 5A, top 8 individuals by record in each weight class in 3A
• Seeding – up to 6 individuals per weight class as per policy
• Scoring and awards – top 6 scored and medaled in 4A and 5A, top 4 scored and medaled in 3A, trophies to top 3 teams in all classes.
3. Recruitment and Retention of Officials
• Officiating pool needs to be larger to insure both availability for regular season and quality for post-season.
• It should be the responsibility of each wrestling coach to identify and encourage capable young individuals with wrestling experience to channel their passion for the sport of wrestling into officiating.
• It is the responsibility of each administrator, coach, participant, and spectator to support the continued involvement of individuals through officiating by conducting themselves in a manner which shows respect for officials.

5. Wrestling Weight Management Program

• Compliance checks by coaches and tournament directors at all regular season events (dual meets and tournaments)

- Teach that character counts
- Enforce the core values positively and sanction when appropriate
- Advocate the core values, encourage, be clear, be uncompromising

- Heavy emphasis on winning, no matter the cost
- The ends justifies the means standard of conduct
- Bending, evading, breaking rules is OK if not caught
- Trash talking, steroid abuse, illegal techniques
• Sportsmanship (YES)
- The way one plays the game is central, primary
- The letter and the spirit of the rules, ethics, etc.
- Victory attained by cheating is counterfeit
- True sport is the Pursuit of Victory with Honor
• Wrestling specific areas
- Establishing minimum wrestling weights
- Weigh-in procedures
- Individual record keeping
- Seeding meeting integrity of records, comments, etc.
- Conduct in dealing with mat officials
- Adherence to team, school, NMAA regulations and policies
*Note – there was only one incident of a coach or athlete being ejected from a contest during the 2007-08 season, can we achieve perfection?
