STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: MICAH LIGHTFOOT

 In General News, Press Releases

Micah Lightfoot is an 8thgrader from Logan and the Future Farmers of America program has been a part of her life for years.  You could say it’s a family affair.  Her sister, Mackenzie, was recognized for her accomplishments in FFA Agriscience Fair Competition at the national level and now Micah is following the same path.

“She’s the greatest influence on me,” said Micah of her sister’s impact.  “At first I didn’t want to get into public speaking.  I was shy.  Then I saw her practice and practice and I wanted to be as successful as she is.”

Micah sure is on the right path.

Earlier this year, Micah earned the right to compete at the New Mexico FFA State Junior High Leadership Contest.  Her speech about wind energy in New Mexico won her the title of prepared public speaker. Micah’s speech was titled ‘What’s the Buzz About Wind’.

“I read an article about wind energy and started researching the idea,” said Micah.

She also went on to win the State FFA Creed speaking event.  According to House Schools Superintendent Bonnie Lightfoot, Micah is only the second person in New Mexico FFA history to win both of these titles simultaneously.

Obviously the FFA apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.  Her father, Clay, is an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor.  He played a big influence on Micah.

“When I was growing up, both my parents were ‘Ag’ teachers,” Micah said.  “When I earned my first FFA jacket I wanted to wear it forever!,” the excited 8thgrader recalled.

Micah stays busy year-round with other projects like showing pigs, sheep and steers in competition. After high school, Micah hopes to earn a judging scholarship and become and Agriculture teacher like her parents.
