NEW MEXICO ATHLETIC DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES
2009 SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARDS


The New Mexico Athletic Directors Association, interscholastic athletic directors in the state of New Mexico, is proud to announce the 2009 Male and Female Scholar Athlete Award Winners.

2009 NMADA Female Scholar Athlete – Jennie Pearson, Eunice High School, nominated by Gary Frazier, Eunice High School Athletic Director. Jennie earned 13 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, and track during her career at EHS. She has been All-District in volleyball and basketball, and selected for the NMHSCA North-South All Star games in both sports. She is already a multiple hurdle event state champion in the hurdles with the 2009 meet still to come. Jennie has maintained a 4.0+ GPA in a strong college prep academic program and will graduate as the EHS valedictorian. She is also the student council president and active in her church youth group and the Lea County Clothes Closet. She plans to attend Southern Methodist University and complete a pre-med program.

2009 NMADA Male Scholar Athlete – Derek Montoya, Artesia High School, nominated by Cooper Henderson, Artesia High School Athletic Director. Derek has earned 9 varsity letters in football, basketball, and track and helped those teams to a number of district championships and state playoff victories, including a state 4A football championship in 2007, and basketball runner-up finish in 2008. He was first team All State in football and basketball and the 4A player of the year in basketball. Derek has earned a 4.05 cumulative GPA in a demanding academic schedule. He plans to attend New Mexico State University and major in engineering.

The NMADA Scholar Athlete Awards include a $1000.00 scholarship as well as plaques to the award winners and their high schools. Nominations are accepted from all current NMADA members and all nominees receive certificates of award for representing their schools.
