IN THE NEWS:

ALTERNATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MEETING- An alternate athletic directors meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 18th at 10:00am at NMAA offices. This meeting is mandatory for all athletic directors that were unable to make the athletic directors meeting held in July. Credit may also be granted by logging on to the concurrent webinar, contact Mindy Ioane by email at mioane@nmact.org  for login instructions.

PRE-SEASON MEETINGS FOR ALL SPORTS- Each member school must conduct a mandatory pre-season meeting to before the start of each season (fall, winter, spring) for athletes, parents and coaches. These meetings must be held for each sport prior to the first regular season contest(s). Click here for more information.

NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTORS:

A few spots remain in the 2010-11 New Mexico Rookie AD Cohort program for first year (and maybe second year if space allows) athletic directors – click here for additional information/registration.

MVP ACCOUNTS
- Athletic directors, please be sure to communicate with your coaching staff that they need to have an MVP account.  These accounts must be established in order for your coach (es) to receive sport specific information sent through the MVP system.  Due to the change from Spirit as an activity to Spirit as a sport, Spirit coach roles must be re-requested in order for those coaches to appear on your school’s page.  Those roles must be established as soon as possible.  This applies to ALL spirit coaches, competitive or non.  For more information regarding MVP, contact Bill Cleland (bcleland@nmact.org or 505.923.3271).

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT:

NMAA staff has extracted and simplified the directives in SB1 to give school athletic directors some direction.  You can now access those simplified directions by going to the NMAA website homepage, "Concussion Management -Athletic Director Requirements under SB1" Click here to access this page.  Please ensure that all coaches complete the Concussion Management course, this course is free of charge.

SPIRIT AS A SPORT:

Discussions continue in regards to any possible implications to the NMAA’s Spirit as a Sport format due to the Federal ruling in Connecticut.  At this time, following conversations with other states, the OCR, and legal council, the NMAA is confident that Spirit as a Sport can co-exist with Sideline Spirit.  The only changes that the NMAA has made to the format that was released earlier this year, is the exclusion of the 60%/80% participation requirement, and the 10 minute DVD requirement.  Please understand districts and schools may still initiate similar requirements for their spirit squads.  However, such requirements will not be statewide or NMAA enforced.  Click here to view the modified format.  We will communicate any further information with NMAA.

SANCTIONED SPIRIT COMPETITIONS- The list of Sanctioned Spirit Competitions is now posted online.  This list will be updated as additional Contests are sanctioned.  Click HERE to access the form and please contact Kristin Derr, NMAA Assistant Director, at 505-923-3265 with any questions.

LIFE OF AN ATHLETE:

The New Mexico Activities Association announced the launch of a nationally unique alcohol education program on July 28th at a press conference at the Albuquerque Hilton Hotel.  The “Life of An Athlete” program is FREE and is believed to be the first interactive on-line program designed to teach high school student-athletes about the dangers of alcohol consumption related to their athletic performance and their life.  The program website can be found at www.lifeofanathlete.com.  Schools are strongly encouraged to have all student athletes take the curriculum, which takes approximately 40-45 minutes to complete.  For more information, please contact Robert Zayas, NMAA Associate Director, at 505.977.5386 or rzayas@nmact.org

SPIRIT OFFICIALS NEEDED:

The NMAA held the first Spirit Officials Clinic on July 30th.  Although we had a good number of attendees, we are still in need of more certified spirit officials.  An alternate training will be held; date and time TBD.  Please click here for more information.  If you have further questions or would like to express interest in becoming certified, please contact Kristin Derr, NMAA Assistant Director, at 505-923-3265 or kderr@nmact.org.

2010 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE VERIFICATION & OFFICIALS’ ASSIGNMENTS:
As we are in the process of verifying schedules and assigning officials for the 2010 football season, we ask that you please take the time to log in to ArbiterSports.com to make sure that your schedules are correct.  You should have already received a Welcome Message from us for accessing ArbiterSports this year.  If you have not accessed the Arbiter for football yet this year or you need an account, you will need to contact Dana Sanchez at the NMAA office.

Please make sure all of your games are in the Arbiter and email Dana immediately with any changes, omissions or other discrepancies on your schedule.  Her email is dsanchez@nmact.org.

Also, if there is anyone at your school who needs access to the Arbiter other than you (i.e., head coach, secretary, etc.), please email their name, title and email address to Dana and she will set up accounts for them.

As a reminder, the schedule in the Arbiter may not be what is listed on the NMAA web site.  It is the responsibility of each school AD to ensure that the schedule we have in the Arbiter is up-to-date, as it will help us to ensure that your officials show up on the correct date and time.
