IN THE NEWS:

“Not every child has an equal talent or an equal ability or equal motivation; but children have the equal right to develop their talent, their ability and their motivation.”    - President John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Sometimes (actually most of the time!) as coaches, we get caught up in the need to win.  Let’s not forget that we are teachers first and our primary responsibility is to do everything within our power to develop to their fullest extent, the skills and character of each and every student athlete who calls us coach!

Gary Tripp

Executive Director

NMAA REFERENDA

NMAA member high schools are being asked to vote on two referenda items by February 18, 2011.  One item involves the football practice start date, while the other item concerns the contestant limitations in track & field.  The referenda may be found here.  Please vote and do your part in the governance of the NMAA.

BYLAW CHANGES

The new 180-school day sit-out period for all students transferring schools will go into effect March 1, 2011. Therefore, any student who transfers from one member school to another on or after March 1, 2011 will be ineligible for varsity athletic participation for 180 school days/ 365 calendar days from the date of their enrollment at their new school.

MVP/SCHOOL ATHLETICS EQUITY ACT WORKSHOP

The NMAA will be holding an informational workshop, that is highly recommended, for interested High School and Middle/Jr. High School Athletic Directors on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid Hotel.  The workshop will cover the School Athletics Equity Act requirements, as well as how to use the MVP 2.1 system for SAEA reporting purposes. Please provide this information to your middle school athletic directors/coordinators as well.  If you have the ability to bring a laptop computer, please do so; we will have wireless Internet available.  Please RSVP by calling Alissa at 505.923.3110 no later than Monday, March 28th.

SPRING RULES CLINICS

The online rules clinics for Baseball, Softball, Golf, Tennis, and Track & Field are available from February 1, 2011 until the end of the day February 28, 2011.  All head coaches are required to attend and must have a valid MVP account to get credit.

MID- SEASON BASKETBALL CLARIFICATIONS

ATHLETIC DIRECTORS: Please review and disseminate the information to your basketball coaches at all levels regarding clarification of several rules and/or points of emphasis, as well as misunderstanding by teams relative to these items!  We will also be sending this information to all officials.  Click here to review this information.

BASKETBALL SEEDING

Please remind all head boys’ and girls’ basketball coaches to submit the coaches input form for the seeding and selection of teams for the state tournament.  This input form for Class A-5A is due by February 27, 2011 at 10:00 AM and Class B is due by March 6, 2011 at 10:00 AM. This form plays an important role in the seeding and selection process so please ensure your coaches fill these out and submit them to us by the due date.  Click here to view this form.

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT

Reminder: Please ensure that all coaches (head and assistant) complete the Concussion Management course, print out the certificate at the end and submit to the athletic director.  This course is free of charge and applies to all coaches grades 7-12 in all sports.  You can access the simplified directions by going to the For Athletic Directors section of the NMAA website and clicking on, "AD Requirements under SB1".  Click here to access this page.
