Athletic Training Challenge Student Profile
Student Profile: Victoria Chaplin
By: Sarah Vernon
Victoria Chaplin is a senior at Rio Rancho High School who dedicates the majority of her time to her favorite activity, Sports Medicine. Chaplin has participated in the Athletic Training Challenge for the last three years, and took home the first place prize both her sophomore and junior year.
Chaplin participates in the Athletic Training Challenge because she one day hopes to become a Certified Athletic Trainer. She also enjoys participating in this activity because of her love of sports and helping people, and that makes this the perfect activity for her to participate in. According to her teacher, Melissa Loiacono, what sets Chaplin apart from other students in the program is her dedication to being the best in academics, and the best in the clinical training room as well.
Not only does she participate in the Athletic Training Challenge, Chaplin is already taking the necessary steps to making medicine a professional career. She is concurrently enrolled in an EMT basic class at Central New Mexico Community College to become certified as an EMT.
For those who do not know, the Athletic Training Challenge is an annual, state wide competition that involves a morning symposium and an afternoon exam. The competition started in the 1999-2000 school year, and includes written and practical exam scores which determine team and individual winners. The exam is modeled after the National Athletic Trainers Association certification exam, which prepares those students, like Chaplin, who want to pursue a career in Athletic Training.
