BOARD OF DIRECTOR'S MEETING SUMMARY:
The Board of Directors voted (10 to 3) to approve Proposal B for the alignment and classification for the next two year block (2008-2009, 2009-2010).
Proposal B keeps the current numbers used in alignment and classification will remain in place for another two year block with most schools remaining in the same classification and districts with a few adjustments.
Specific Sport Adjustments
Baseball
1) Classes A and AA have been combined into one class starting in 2008-2009 with 8 districts. The baseball sports specific committee will work with the NMAA staff to determine playoff formats.
Basketball
2) Teams have been adjusted to balance District 2A and 6A due to a very large District 2.
Cross Country
3) Class A and AA have been adjusted to be as geographical as possible.
Football
4) New teams have been added. Cuba and NMMI have been moved from AAA to AA which improved this class in a variety of ways.
Tennis
5) NMAA, in collaboration with the tennis sports specific committee, will formulate a defined wild card system for Classes 3A and 4A.
Softball
6) Five districts will be necessary due to geography. The NMAA staff, in collaboration with the softball sports specific committee, will determine playoff format.
Wrestling
7) Two classifications have been established, as opposed to three, to make this a more competitive sport.
In other sports, new teams have been added to districts as per geographical location.
A special Board meeting will be called in the very near future to deal with potential problems in Class 4A in regards to an eight or nine team district.
The Board of Directors voted to approve to grant the NMAA exclusive telecast or broadcast rights to all events at the playoff level. “Telecast” and “Broadcast” rights include, but are not limited to, over the air television, cable television, radio, internet or web streaming. The “playoff level” includes any post-season event identified as a festival, district, sectional, regional or state by the Board of Directors action.
The Board of Directors approved allowing Class A schools to coop on team sports at the middle school level.
The discussion regarding the role and purpose of the Board of Directors was tabled until the next meeting.
The Board of Directors tabled the proposal to establish a fee to be paid by the aggrieved party for appeals that are appealed to the Board of Directors. The Board had concerns that the Public Education Department would not approve the bylaws.
The Board of Directors approved the revision of the NMAA coin flip procedures. The coin flip will be administered as soon as possible by the NMAA Director of Football or the NMAA Executive Director. This was implemented because schools and fans want to know as soon as possible as to the location of the game.
The Board of Directors approved the issuing of a referendum to Class AA football schools that Class AA football schools play 60% of their schedules against other schools in their classification according to a master schedule prepared by the NMAA in conjunction with all AA schools.
The Board of Directors tabled the adoption of a new system to seed and select the state basketball tournament. Individuals would be selected statewide to watch games in their region, paid a stipend by the NMAA and eventually seed the tournament bracket beginning with the 2008-2009 basketball season.
The Board of Directors adopted a 16 team double elimination softball bracket in class 3A – 5A and an 8-team double elimination bracket in Class A/AA at the state softball championships for the 2008 season.
The Board of Directors tabled that all head golf coaches attend the golf workshop and the NMAA rules clinic on January 25-26, 2008.
The Board of Directors approved keeping the Class A and AA baseball tournament on week #46 and moving the Class 3A-5A baseball tournament to week #47.
The Board of Directors approved changing the baseball start date to week #32 from week #33.
