Is there a doctor in the house? On April 3 and 4, the UNM Student Union Building will hold future doctors galore.
Potential emergency medical technicians, dental hygienists, nutritionists and even veterinarians will compete at the State Heath Occupations Student Association Competition on April 3 and 4. HOSA is an organization dedicated to the education and possible career opportunities in the health care profession for secondary and post-secondary school.
Onate High School, Carlsbad High School, Career Prep High School, CNM and others will compete in up to 2 of the 15 different competitions. More than 50 students will compete in events such as, but not limited to: EMT, first-aid and safety, medical terminology, medical reading and analyses, dental medicine, nutrition and pathophysiology. This year’s competition will even include veterinarian analyses and crime scene investigations.
Opening ceremonies will be held Friday evening at seven. The first competition is scheduled to start at 8:30 on Saturday morning. HOSA will be having guest speakers from The Medical Reserve Core, The Medical Core for ROTC and a national officer from New Jersey to advise, assist and encourage the students during the competition and commend the student of their hard work before the closing ceremony. The Closing ceremony along with the distribution of awards will start at 5 p.m.
HOSA has been in New Mexico for over 5 years and has held a State Competition for over 3 years. Students who earn a high score in their competition have the opportunity to travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete at the National Competition in June.
