Benjamin J. Chavez is no new comer to the world of singing. However as a child, his parents put him in sports hoping he’d find his talent in athletics. One day he found the courage to tell his parents that he loved to sing.
“We were happy he had found something he loves to do,” Ofelia and Leon, Chavez’s parents said. Chavez said to his parents that he “sings from his heart.” And the passion he feels when he sings shows. As Chavez started his solo at the Sonic Drive-In State Competition chills ran down the arms and legs of the audience.
A senior at West Mesa High School, Chavez has been in the advanced choir since his freshman year. He is also a new member of the Young Voices of the Santa Fe Opera. He is planning on studying Pathology at the University of New Mexico after his graduation. He is also the president of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, Inc. at his school. And if that isn’t enough, he is also ranked 4th in his graduating class and well as being actively involved with his church.
“My favorite thing to sing is pirate music. German music is also fine,” said Chavez. He said he enjoys singing the low notes and memorizing the lyrics are not hard, it would be like memorizing your favorite song on the radio.
Recent studies show that students who study the arts, such as music and choir are more successful in school said the Music Education Online Website.
