IN THE NEWS:

Governor Bill Richardson Signs Bill Supporting School Sports Officials
SANTA FE-Governor Bill Richardson today signed HB 174, School Event Service Gross Receipts. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Dennis Roch, exempts New Mexicans who referee, umpire or score school events from paying gross receipts tax on the income they receive from officiating.

“Those who take the time to referee and umpire are critical to school athletic programs across the state,” Governor Bill Richardson said. “I am proud to sign this bill, which will serve as an incentive to encourage more New Mexicans to pursue officiating. New Mexico children are the winners with this tax break.”

For more information on this legislation, please contact Dana Sanchez (NMOA Commissioner of Officials) at 505.923.3277 or dsanchez@nmact.org.

NMAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
The New Mexico Activities Association Board of Directors took major action during the March 11 meeting to address member schools’ budgetary concerns. The Board meeting was held at The Pit as the 2009 State Basketball Championships entered the second day of play.

The Board of Directors voted to reduce member school assessments by 6% for the 2009-2010 school year and to reformat several state championship events. Their unanimous vote eliminated volleyball state tournament pool play, soccer state tournament pool play, two out of three in the state baseball tournament first round, the double elimination format in the state softball tournament and reduced the tennis state tournament to one week versus two weeks.

The state tournament changes will go into effect during the Fall of 2009. Gary Tripp, NMAA Executive Director, addressed the Board and stated that the championships should be “revamped to save member schools’ money.” The revamped state championships will help to reduce costs associated with schools competing in NMAA State
Championship events.
