It seems like yesterday when we were sitting in the “Pit” enjoying the state tournament games, watching our student-athletes excel. When I say “excel,” I’m talking about not only excelling on the court, but off as well. What great kids we have, and what great coaches you are, molding these players into quality citizens. You would be amazed as to how many phone calls we receive complimenting our student-athletes on their actions away from the court. That is what we are all about – education based athletics.
There are a few changes beginning this season that I want to bring to your attention:
1. In Classes 3A-5A, the Regular Season District Champion and the District Tournament Champion will automatically qualify to the State Tournament. If the Regular Season District Champion and the District Tournament Champion are different, they will both automatically qualify. The remaining teams will be selected by the committee to fill the 16-team bracket.
2. The Regular Season District Champion will host a 1st round of state game, unless two regular season district champions are paired against each other. In that case, the higher seed will host. In all other games without a regular season district champion, the higher seed will host.
3. There is a new student and coaches’ ejection policy voted on by the Board of Directors. See Section 7 of the NMAA Handbook. It is also explained as you continue through the rules clinic.
4. The only change made to the state tournament bracket is in regards to Class 4A and 5A girls. Class 4A girls will play their quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in the Pit this year, while the 5A girls will move to Santa Ana Star Center. I know this may not be popular for Class 5A, but I have always said that attendance at games drives the decisions for the Pit schedule. Class 4A had a tremendous year in 2007-08 and thus the switch.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact me at (505) 923-3267 or (505) 977-5384. We look forward to another exciting season. Thanks for all you do.
Sincerely,
Sally Marquez
