New Mexico Scholastic Press Association Revs Up

More than 80 students and advisers from around the state helped rejuvenate the New Mexico  Scholastic Press Association at a journalism workshop Saturday, Aug. 29 at Highland High School in Albuquerque.

The students and advisers had their pick of activities, with workshops on design, photography, opinion writing and multi-media journalism as well as an opening session and a keynote speaker at lunch. Presenters included Donn Friedman and Rachel Conger of the Albuquerque Journal and Phil Casaus and Mark Holm, formerly of the Albuquerque Tribune. High School newspaper advisers Pat Graff of La Cueva and April van Buren of Mesa Vista also presented sessions.
"This was a great start in our efforts to connect advisers and students who toil in the journalism trenches of scholastic publications," said Rebeca Zimmermann, interim president and Highland newspaper, journalism and broadcast teacher. "We were hoping for 50 participants, so  the turnout was just phenomenal."
The NMSPA plans a spring conference which will include competitions and workshops. The group is working with the New Mexico Activities Association to make the event a recognized statewide competition, and the NMPA and the Albuquerque Journal have offered help as well. Zimmermann said the group would appreciate volunteers to help judge competitions for the spring event,  probably to be in mid-February.
Board members are Zimmermann, vice president  Pat Graff, secretary Barb Armijo (formerly of the Albuquerque Journal and now teaching at Atrisco Heritage Academy) and treasurer Joan Goessl (Sandi Prep newspaper adviser and former Associated Press staffer).
